Walter and Myrtle met in Santa Barbara California in 1945 at the US Maine Air Base. Myrt was serving in the Woman Marines working in the base Hospital as a dietitian. Walt was in the Navy as a corpsman attached to the Marines working in the surgical unit of the Hospital (see Courting Myrt). When Walt was sent overseas, they corresponded for nine months with love letters until they both were discharged from the military and attended college together at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. They were married on December 15, 1946 followed by more studies at Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon. Myrt had a career in education, teaching grades one through graduate school (see Curriculum Vitae). Walt served as Professor of Education and Psychology (see Curriculum Vitae).
Their first son, Wally David, was born in McMinnville, Oregon on November 24,1948, and passed away of Multiple Sclerosis on December 31, 2003. Wally was a community college instructor before becoming disabled. He was never married.
Their second son, James Lee, was born in Greeley, Colorado on December 14, 1951. He had a career as a civilian mechanical engineer in the Department of Defense for the US Navy. Jim never married. He passed away suddenly and unexpectedly from a heart attack on April 24, 2009.
Their third son, Thomas Dean, was born in Boulder, Colorado on March 24, 1954. He has one son and three daughters, and two grandsons and two granddaughters. His career has been as a School Psychologist.
